It’s World Fair Trade Day this Saturday (10 May) and the theme this year is ‘Fair Trade People’ – a chance to celebrate the remarkable people behind this incredible movement and also to recognise that, at its core, Fair Trade is not about products, branding or logos; it’s about people and community.
This is what The Big Lunch is all about – connecting people and strengthening communities – so what better way to show your support for the Fair Trade movement than to hold a Big ‘Fair Trade’ Lunch? Fair Trade Wales is supporting this year’s Big Lunch and is encouraging people to add a Fair Trade flavour to their celebrations. They also have up to £500 available as part of their small grants programme to help you organise your event.
Tristan Humphreys, Campaigns Manager for Fair Trade Wales said, “As the first Fair Trade Nation in the world, Wales has demonstrated what we, as a society, can achieve when we work together. We’ve contributed to improving the lives of millions of workers and farmers around the world and we’re very proud of that. The Fair Trade movement is all about taking positive action as a community and its for this reason that we’re supporting The Big Lunch. Its a great opportunity to get together with your friends, family and neighbours and we’d encourage all our supporters to get involved by holding a Big ‘Fair Trade’ Lunch this June”
Pupils from Ysgol Esgob Morgan School in St. Asaph, Denbighshire who’s motto, quite aptly, is “Gyda’n gilydd anelwn yn uchel – Together we aim high”, are planning a whole week of Big ‘Fair Trade’ Lunches this June, planned and prepared by a different class each day. Richard Hatwood, Special Educational Needs Coordinator at Ysgol Esgob Morgan said,
“We are really excited about supporting The Big Lunch this year and being the first school in Wales to host a ‘Fairtrade Big Lunch’! We are really proud of our Fairtrade status and are committed to supporting our pupils to become active and informed global citizens. The Big Lunch lends itself really well to sharing the Fair Trade message, with its focus on food and community, and we think its the perfect opportunity to invite the whole school community to come together to share and enjoy some lovely Fairtrade and school-grown food and to celebrate another successful year.”
