Residents of Aberystwyth’s Gerddi’r Ffynnon and Gerddi Rheidol came together with the help of Cantref and Mid-Wales Housing to throw a Keep Wales Tidy Tea Break to warm up for their The Big Lunch this June. Local families of both housing estates came together to enjoy some tea and cakes with each other at Gerddi’r FFynnon in preparation for their Big lunch; encourage more people to get involved.
Cantref’s Growing Greener Communities Officer, Jill Nichols-Lowry, who co-organised the Tidy Tea Break with Hannah Jones of Mid-Wales Housing, said:
“We’ve been looking for an excuse to throw a get-together for the tenants from our two neighbouring housing schemes for quite some time. It’s important to encourage everybody to get to know each other – and this seemed like the perfect opportunity.
“The Tidy Tea Break was really well attended, with over 30 people turning up to have a cuppa and chat about what we might be able to do in June for The Big Lunch. We’re so excited for June 2 and are hoping that Gerddi’r Fynnon’s gardening club will be able to grow us some tasty veg to help us with the food on the day. Our next step is to have a big meeting to sort out who’s going to be doing what. We have lots of talented people in our neighbourhood who can do the cooking and decorating, so it should be a fantastic event. We’re all really looking forward to it and would particularly like to thank Gerddi’r Ffynnon’s warden, Rita Llwyd for all her support.”
Sarah Philpott, from Keep Wales Tidy said: “We’re really pleased that Gerddi’r Fynnon and Gerddi Rheidol have been able to use their Tidy Tea Breaks to prepare for The Big Lunch.
“We’re all about empowering local people to improve their areas through keeping them clean and tidy, but a lot of the time people aren’t confident enough to ask their neighbours to come together and help. We hope that this year The Big Lunch will bring even more communities together and make Wales an even friendlier place to live in. We also hope that by raising awareness of The Big Lunch through our Tidy Tea Breaks, organisers will turn to us for tips on how to have a tidy Big Lunch in 2013.”
